Tooth extractions are minor surgical procedures in which your dentist removes damaged teeth. You may need extractions for a variety of reasons, but the experts at
Dental Specialists of New Jersey only extract teeth if absolutely necessary. We can replace extracted teeth with crowns, bridges, or dentures as needed to help you maintain a beautiful smile.
We may suggest that you undergo tooth extractions because of the following:
- Tooth crowding.
- Painful or impacted wisdom teeth.
- Dental decay.
- Gum disease.
- Jawbone loss.
- Tooth trauma.
- Tooth infections.
If we can save a tooth from requiring extraction, we will do everything we can to do so.
We will let you know if you’re a candidate for tooth extractions after discussing your symptoms, oral health history, and your desired outcome with you. We will then examine your teeth and gums and review the results of your dental X-rays before personalizing a dental plan that’s best for you.
Right before tooth extractions at Dental Specialists of New Jersey, we will numb the treatment area and give you a sedative to help you rest or fall asleep. Afterward, we will make tiny incisions to gently remove damaged or crowded teeth and close the incisions. We will also place gauze in the empty spaces to slow any bleeding.
After tooth extractions, you rest in a recovery area for a short time. A friend or family member must drive you home and stay with you. Get plenty of rest, take medications as directed by your dentist, and begin eating a soft-food diet.
Avoid strenuous exercise, drinking through a straw, brushing your teeth vigorously, or using mouthwash until your specialist permits you to do so. Call our office if you have new or worsening symptoms during the healing process and attend all follow-up visits.
After a period of healing, we can replace missing permanent teeth with dental implants if you’re a candidate for them, along with crowns, bridges, or dentures.
