A receding gum line can wreak havoc on your oral health, but a gum graft can help save your gums and your teeth from irreparable damage. Find out more about the procedure here.
If you’ve noticed your teeth are extra sensitive lately or that your gum line is maybe a little shorter than it has in the past, you might be suffering from receding gums. Three out of four adults have some sort of periodontal disease, which can include receding gums. Gum grafts are often the best solution for this common dental issue.
Our team at Dental Specialists of New Jersey has five things we want you to know about before getting your gum graft.
1. What a gum graft is
A gum graft is a common dental surgery where gum tissue is taken from one area of the mouth and placed in a different area. Gum tissue is typically taken from the roof of your mouth. Gum grafts are most commonly used to treat gum recession.
2. Who needs a gum graft
If you’ve found yourself experiencing gum recession, you’re not alone. Four to twelve percent of adults are affected by gum recession and can often not realize it’s happening since it usually develops so gradually. Over time the root of your tooth will become exposed and cause extreme tooth sensitivity. It’s possible for gum recession to get to the point of permanent tooth loss.
Gum recession can be brought on by the effects of gum disease or by long-term teeth grinding, known as bruxism.
Gum grafts are the best solution in order to repair the damage to your gum tissue.
3. Benefits of getting a gum graft
There are lots of great reasons to consider getting a gum graft. This procedure can reduce your risk of developing gum disease and cavities. It can also decrease your tooth sensitivity while also improving the overall look of your smile.
4. What the procedure is like
During the procedure, the area that’s being treated will be numbed so you don’t experience any pain. Your provider will then harvest the needed tissue from the roof of your mouth and then place it over your recessed gums and exposed teeth roots. The new tissue is then stitched into place as your new gumline.
5. How to make your results last
After your procedure, make sure to follow all of your provider’s after care instructions carefully.
When the healing period is over, you’ll need to continue good oral hygiene habits in order to avoid any gum disease that can damage your graft. If you grind your teeth, take steps to prevent any damage that can be done to your gum tissue.
All of these things can help to ensure that you won’t need further gum grafts down the road.
